About the course
About Spring Holiday for Strings
The Spring Holiday for Strings has been running for over 50 years. It was founded by Leonard Davis, a professional viola player, who was dedicated to encouraging amateur players to enjoy making music together. Spring Holiday is an extremely friendly course, with many people returning year after year.
The course provides an opportunity for string players to enjoy three days of music making, both in string chamber groups and as part of a string orchestra, with coaching provided by professional tutors. Unlike most string chamber music courses, you do not need to come as part of a pre-formed string quartet, and you will make music with a variety of different people over the three days.
Will the course suit me?
To get the most out of the course you will need to be a competent sight-reader — for instance, being able to hold your own part independently in a string quartet by Mozart or Haydn. Previous experience of chamber music playing is helpful but not essential.

The tutors for the course are members of the Hammig String Quartet, all experienced performers and teachers.

Sister course
Autumn Holiday for Strings
Owing to the high demand for places on our Spring courses, a few years ago we started running a second annual course, which takes place each October at Holland House, a beautiful Tudor house in Worcestershire.
The course is run on very similar lines to our Spring course — warm-ups to start the day, coached chamber music sessions during the day, and string orchestra in the evening.
